When you want a Bermuda grass that delivers performance under pressure, Bimini® Bermudagrass is built for it. This improved Bermuda variety is prized for its density, wear recovery, and ability to stay green longer than many conventional Bermudas under stress. It’s used on high-end lawns, sports fields, and commercial landscapes for good reason.

What is Bimini® Bermudagrass?

Bimini® Bermudagrassis an improved cultivar of common Bermuda (Cynodon species). It’s developed to combine the classic toughness of Bermuda with better aesthetics and resilience. It has a fine texture, dense growth, and vigorous spreading via stolons and rhizomes, allowing quick recovery from wear or damage.

Compared to standard Bermuda varieties, Bimini often outperforms in stress conditions like drought, heat, and heavy traffic.

Characteristics

Color & Appearance: Deep, rich green when actively growing.
Texture: Fine to medium leaf blades, giving a softer look and feel relative to coarser Bermuda varieties.
Growth habit: Spreads through both stolons and rhizomes, forming a dense turf that resists invasion by weeds.
Durability & Recovery: Excellent wear tolerance; able to recover quickly from traffic or damage.
Heat & Drought Tolerance: Very good. Once established, Bimini resists heat stress and manages lower water conditions better than many standard Bermudas.
Shade Tolerance: Somewhat better shade tolerance compared to typical Bermudas, though full sun is still ideal.
Cold/Growth Season Behavior: In cooler periods, it will go semi-dormant (brown). But it’s noted for greening earlier in spring and remaining green later into the fall under favorable conditions.

General Maintenance

To keep Bimini® performing well, here are recommended care guidelines:

Mowing:
Maintain between 0.5 and 1.5 inches (or up to 2 inches, depending on use). Mow often during peak growing season.

Watering:
After establishment, water deeply but infrequently. Aim to satisfy the root zone rather than frequent light watering.

Sunlight:
Best performance in full sun; shade reduces density and robustness.

Soil & Drainage:
Prefers well-drained soils. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Repair & Recovery:
Use sod or plugs in warm growing months to repair damage. Recovery is faster than many less vigorous Bermudas.

Installation (Sod laying):
Lay sod in staggered (brick) pattern, use sod roller to press into soil, water immediately to depth of ~3–4 in.

Advantages of Bimini® Bermudagrass

  • High wear tolerance and fast recovery
  • Deep green, fine-to-medium texture
  • Better stress, heat, and drought resistance
  • Good adaptability in residential, sports, and commercial settings
  • Greener earlier and later in growing season than many Bermudas

Potential Drawbacks

  • Turns brown (dormant) in cold or when growth ceases
  • Needs full or near-full sun for best density
  • Maintenance (mowing, watering, fertilizing) must be managed smartly
  • Repair in winter or cold times will be slow

Is Bimini® Bermudagrass Right for You?

If your climate supports warm-season grasses and your lawn or landscape is subject to traffic and stresses like heat or drought, Bimini is a compelling choice. Its ability to recover and maintain color under stress gives it an edge over many standard Bermudas.

If, however, you’re in a colder zone where winters are harsh or your site is heavily shaded, you may want to consider more cold-tolerant or shade-tolerant alternatives
