If you want a warm-season lawn that offers a deep blue-green color, excellent durability, and strong recovery from wear, Celebration® Bermudagrass is one of the top choices. Bred originally in Australia, it has become popular across the U.S. for both residential and commercial use because it balances beauty with rugged performance

What is Celebration® Bermudagrass?

Celebration® Bermudagrass is a variety of Cynodon (Bermudagrass) known for its fine-texture, dense growth, and excellent performance under stress. It spreads via stolons and rhizomes, creating a tough, resilient turf. It's especially valued where lawns have high traffic, drought risk, or partial shade.

Developed in the 1990s, Celebration® Bermudagrass has competed in research trials and gained recognition for its wear tolerance, shade tolerance (for a Bermuda), and drought resistance

Characteristics

Color: Deep blue-green, which remains vibrant during summer heat.
Texture: Medium-fine blades; dense canopy. Soft to the touch.
Growth habit: Spreads via both stolons and rhizomes. Recovery from injury is rapid.
Wear & Traffic Tolerance: Excellent. Frequently used in sports fields, commercial landscapes, and areas with high foot traffic.
Drought Resistance: Very good once established. Can sustain long warm, dry periods with less water than many other Bermudas.
Shade Tolerance: Better than many other Bermuda varieties; tolerates some shade. Still, performs best in full sun.
Cold & Winter Response: Goes dormant (brown) in cold, but retains color and recovers well in spring. Fall color retention and spring green-up are good.

General Maintenance

To keep Celebration® Bermudagrass looking its best, here are care guidelines:

Mowing:
Keep between 0.5 and 1.5 inches (some recommend 1-2 in). Mowing frequency depends on growth rate.

Watering:
After establishment, about 1 inch per week; water more frequently when very hot or during drought. Avoid overwatering.

Sunlight:
Full sun (6-8+ hours/day) is ideal. Tolerates shade, but shade reduces density and color.

Soils & Drainage:
Adapts to sandy or clay soils; needs good drainage. Soil pH ideally neutral to slightly acidic.

Fertilization:
Moderate feeding; Celebration® Bermudagrass responds well to fertilization but doesn’t need extreme inputs. Regular feeding during active growth ("summer") helps maintain density and color.

Wear & Recovery:
Excellent - recovers rapidly from damage (divots, heavy use) due to its aggressive rhizomes/stolons.

Disease / Pest Management:
Generally good resistance. Watch for fungal issues in overly wet or shaded areas; preventive fungicide application may be needed in such conditions.

Advantages of Celebration® Bermudagrass

  • Deep, attractive color that stands out in summer
  • Excellent wear and injury recovery makes it durable
  • Strong drought tolerance once established
  • Better shade tolerance than typical Bermudas
  • Helps reduce maintenance input (water & fertilizer) compared to some high-maintenance grasses

Potential Drawbacks

  • Will go dormant and lose color in cold/winter months
  • Needs good sun and drainage - too much shade or moisture reduces performance
  • Lawn must be mowed more frequently when growing fast; overly aggressive mowing or cutting too low can stress the grass
  • Can build up thatch if overfertilized or overwatered

Is Celebration® Bermudagrass Right for You?

If your climate is warm, you have a yard that sees moderate to heavy use, and you want striking color + durability, Celebration® Bermudagrass is an excellent choice. Especially good if water is a concern and you want something that looks premium but doesn’t demand intense upkeep.

However, if you’re in a very shaded area or in a cold-winter region, a grass that’s more shade-tolerant or cold-hardy might be a better pick.
